Fall is in full swing, and to commemorate the start of this festive time of year, we wanted to get our beloved community talking about none other than, you guessed it, pickleball!
On the official first day of fall, we got a little corny and decided to ask you, “Why did you fall in love with pickleball?” (Get it? Fall in love?)
It was no surprise to us that, when we asked, you enthusiastically chimed into tell us why you fell in love with pickleball.
It wasn’t an easy choice, but after reading through the responses, we selected three pickleball players to take home our brand-new Mirage Poly Core pickleball paddle!
The winners were:
Check out their responses!
Ruth Feagan: “I was recovering from a fractured elbow and was also in the process of weight loss (35 lbs.) and wanted an activity that would benefit me. I had not been very physically active for many years, so didn’t want anything too strenuous. Pickleball fit the bill perfectly. It has increased my flexibility, stamina, muscle tone and improved my elbow mobility. What a perfect sport for someone of my age (58). But it has truly been the social aspect of the game that has me hooked. I play at my local Wellness Centre and have made many great friends…”
Taylor Bongard: “I fell in love with pickleball because it gave my friend and I a chance to connect while doing something good for our bodies. And NOW I would say the best part of the sport is the incredible COMMUNITY that is growing every single day. So many wonderful people.”
Janice Ortiz: “I’ve always been very active. I started playing tennis eight years ago, at the age of 56. I was truly addicted and played several times a week until two years ago when I started experiencing severe pain in one of my knees. Had to really cut back and switch it up to walking a lot with my dog and [lifting] weights. So when I heard about pickleball this last January I thought this might fill the bill. It did, and both my husband and I are addicted and I’m loving it and totally enjoying breaking out [in] a sweat. At age 64 it’s perfect! Actually perfect at every age!”
Of course, we thought that all of the responses were fantastic and we appreciate the time you took to tell us your personal pickleball stories. So we do want to put the spotlight on some honorable mention responses. Enjoy!
Ernie Medina Jr: “My profession is lifestyle wellness, and for almost 30 years, I’ve been called the ‘Physical Activity Evangelist’ for my constant promotion of physical activity to our patients and the general public. When I found pickleball a year ago, I finally found the Holy Grail of physical activity because it overcomes all the barriers and excuses people gave for not exercising. That’s a big reason why I fell in love with pickleball!!!”
Susie Biely: “I played USTA tennis for 15 years, [when] at 49 I was told I was too young for a knee replacement and too old to get it fixed. I was devastated. I loved my tennis friends and the competition. This last March I was in Arizona and started talking to a neighbor who by chance taught pickleball. I inquired on learning to play. The best thing that has happened to me! The first day I attended, my tennis love was exhumed all over. Because of my bad knee I told myself every other day should be all I should play, but [with] the love of the sport and the great friends I met through the sport, everyday it was! Love the sport as much as my tennis years! I live in Wisconsin and found great play, and [I’m] looking forward to returning to Arizona for our winter months to play pickleball at Robson Ranch in Eloy, where I learned this great sport!”
Beverley Stach: “I love pickleball because it beats being a couch potato, and being active is vital to your state of mind and body. We’ve made friends with like-minded pickleball players from around the country and we immediately share a common interest. In fact, we’re more like family and take an interest in their wellbeing. Reuniting in tournaments with friends we’ve made makes for many laughs and good times. How boring life was pre-pickleball.”
Of course, how could we not mention Keith Wertman’s humorous response when he said, “Because who wouldn’t love a sport that keeps me out of the kitchen.”
Again, we would like to thank all of the pickleball players who entered our First Day of Fall Facebook contest!
