How did you start playing pickleball/how did you discover pickleball?

About two years ago, I was taking my daughter, Rebecca, to soccer practice at Bamford Park in Davie, Florida, when I saw one of my friends had posted on Facebook to try pickleball. As luck would have it, it was at the same park where my daughter was practicing. I dropped her off at practice and hunted around for the courts. The people at the park were so friendly and gave me a paddle and allowed me to join in. One game and I was hooked! After that, I went to play pickleball three times a week (every time Rebecca had practice). It wasn’t long before I was playing pickleball even on the days she didn’t have soccer practice!

What is your favorite GAMMA paddle?

My favorite GAMMA paddle is the Phaser 2.0. I like the deflection that the paddle has and the control that it gives me.

How often do you get to play?

I play a minimum of six days a week. Weekdays we play in the evenings (4-9p.m.) and on the weekends, we play in the mornings (8 a.m. – 12 p.m.), unless I have a tournament.

Why do you love pickleball?

I love pickleball for many reasons. One of my favorite things about pickleball is the socialization. I meet a lot of people, both at our local courts as well as at tournaments around the country. Everyone is very friendly. Since you are close together on the courts there are a lot of conversations and laughter. You meet people of all ages – from teenagers up to those in their 80s. After a hard day at work it’s also good for stress relief! Plus, it is a great way to get some exercise, stay healthy, and have fun at the same time!

What motivates you (In life and/or when playing pickleball)?

I am motivated by self-improvement and in pickleball there are no limits. The more you train, the better you get. The learning curve doesn’t have a finish line!

Who do you typically play with?

We have a big group of players at my local courts in Davie, but I also make trips to Pompano, Naples, Terramar, Tamarac, Sunrise, and West Palm Beach. It is always fun to play with new players and learn new styles of play. Steve Kennedy and Phil Bagley are our local pros so I love to play with them any chance I get! Adam Belshe is my drill partner and is always willing to hit with me so I can work on a specific shot.

What stroke are you best at/what kind of player are you?

I like to play the soft game. My favorite shot is when someone hits a ball as hard as they can from the back of the court and I just drop it over the net into the kitchen.

What’s one thing that everyone can do to improve their pickleball game?

Pickleball is a game of percentages. You have to try and make less unforced errors than your opponents. Therefore one thing everyone can benefit from is consistency. Practicing each shot over and over again until you can make it every time.

We’d like to thank Lucy Kitcher for allowing us pick her pickleball brain! If you’d like to join the GAMMA pickleball community, send us an email to learn more!
